EDEN AT FOGG DAM ENVIRONMENT POLICY
Eden at Fogg Dam is a member of Land for Wildlife. Approximately 50 of the 200 acre property has been preserved for native flora and fauna conservation.
The homestead at Eden is designed for coolness in the tropics with natural cross ventilation. The building is located at the correct angle to catch breezes and is shaded by a full length veranda on the northern, sunny side. The roof is treated with heat reflecting paint and additional coolness is achieved with whirly birds on the roof. All rooms have overhead fans plus split system air conditioners, for those unused to the tropics. An abundance of natural light comes from expansive windows.
The self contained Tropical Suite, underneath the homestead, was designed by a multi award winning architect. It’s louvred windows catch breeze from all directions. Surrounding verandas ensure the windows are permanently shaded. It’s naturally cool, has overhead fans as well as split system air conditioning, for those who require it.
A solar/electric boosted hot water system services the property and energy efficiency is a criteria when purchasing electrical equipment. A purpose built sheltered, natural clothes drying area off the laundry eliminates the need to use a clothes dryer except in extraordinary circumstances.
Waste water is recycled onto the garden. Two worm farms and two compost bins take care of organic waste management. Waste paper is used for mulshing. Glass and aluminium are sorted and recycled according to recyclable options available at the time. These change as sometimes the cost of recycling some items, eg transport south, close recycling services.
Fresh produce is provided in season from the organic orchard and vegetable garden.
Our tropical fruit farm is certified organic with NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia. We are also members of Greening Australia and Freshcare. Both NASAA and Freshcare audit our farm environmental practices annually. We also participate in the NT Sustainable Land Use program covering: air quality; biosecurity; carbon; chemicals; climate; ecosystems; energy; nutrients; soils; waste; water and weeds.
Cane toads (introduced to Australia and fatal in all forms to most native fauna) are collected on a daily basis and kept in a gaol where they have access to food and water until being transported to a ‘toad detention centre’ where they are euthanized and made into fertilizer.
We are committed to friendly, professional, personalised service and use sustainable energy wherever possible to care for the environment.
If you are committed to sustainable living for a better environment you can be confident about staying at Eden at Fogg Dam.
